Poland my love,
Foto-Reportage

I show to my camera landscapes of my childhood and youth.
Warsaw, Kazimierz, Lublin, - countryside, towns and streets.

by Wis - Wieslaw Sadurski

My camera has no sentimental reasons to be here, it has no fantasies about life and death,
no memories, neither judgments nor moods.

What a relieve to travel with such a companion! We start in Warsaw.

I was living in WARSAW 1960-1970, a student, a published poet, freelance writer.
1970 left for Stockholm. Coming back to Warsaw for a while in 1972, 74 and 76.

Warsaw King Castle ruins
1960 I was studying Philosophy at the Warsaw University, and often on a sunny day took a sit in sunshine on a stone in front of Warsaw King Castle ruin, reading, learning, yearning. That was the only vertical piece of wall, standing there. After fall of communism fully rebuilt and beautiful.

I'm happy that I have to look for another sunny place, when I come there again!

KAZIMIERZ at Wisla

it is a small town at Wisla River upstream from Warsaw.
I like the route along the river, occasionally washing my feet and hands there.

From Kazimierz we travel to the small green village, the place of my birth.

A single tree at the crossroads. Well, no roads, just a sandy path of no return.

- Look at the green village, feel the heat of the summer, smell the coming harvest - I say.
My camera opens its eye.
Feel like someone's watching me, when I see soft wide fields and a village where I was born,
on a hot windy summer day like today.

A wooden house down the hill.
My father built it when I was six; there was really electric light there!
Don't know who lives there now, oh well, no need to know.

Path to the school looks like 60 years ago; hot sand, bare feet,

and my school in Sobieszczany is there.

I wanted to visit my childhood friend, alas!
only some trees grow where the farm once was.

Along old railway we come to graveyard
and grave where my parents rest.

Sister Hania is there with her husband Andrzej,
bringing fresh flowers.

Many friends and relatives rest down there in their graveyards.
I'd like to see them or talk to them, but my camera shows lo! -
all the gravestones turn back on me.
I'll better go back to life.

Long path in strong scents and wind,
leading to place where my grand mom was living.
Wild bushes overgrew the place, mercifully
covering what was there, few ruins, many memories.

Sentimental wandering!
Happy to go back to my sister's house and rest there at a peaceful flower site!

I lived in LUBLIN 1953-1960, my early youth,
a second school, then 6 month job as an electrician, the winter as a homeless tramp
and next two years with an extremely well paid job as a radio-technician.
1960 I left for Warsaw, for studies, wanting to escape military service.

That is the cloister I was living
at age of 13, one year long story of no words (yet!).

Say we are in 1953,
every morning at 7,30 I go to my school placed in a half ruined building.
On my way I see the Castle surrounded by barbed wire fences and four towers jeweled with machine-guns.
Germans left it 1944 with rooms filled with corps of people executed in last days, in last hours of their presence.
Polish communists turned it into a political prison with torture chambers.

After 1956 revolution the castle was rebuilt and turned into a culture place.
Yeah! 1958 I went there to see the very first exhibition in my life, paintings by Kantor.

There is a graveyard here as well, with a grave where my brother Andrzej rests.
Sister Hania and his wife Ewa take care of the place, feeding it with fresh flowers.

concentration camp Majdanek Lublin, Foto von Wieslaw Sadurski

Here is another place which weighted heavily on my life,
At the age of 6, I saw the concentration camp Majdanek, Lublin.

Crematoriums and skeletons, barracks filled with human hair, with children shoes,
an exhibition of artworks made of human skin, all in a heavy smell of death.
There were many very many crows flying above the camp in 1946.
Just like now, when I shoot my photo.

So, let me say, our wandering came to a place, where a well established withdrawal is needed.
I better go home, into my everlasting nowhere. Enough is enough.

On my way back to Berlin I visit Zgorzelec.
