Who are the Sadhus?
I had the unique opportunity to photograph hundreds of holy men at a Sadhu gathering in India, where I engaged in conversations and captured the essence of their spiritual lives.
Sadhus are holy men in India who have chosen the path of renunciation and dedicated their lives to spiritual practice. They are ascetics who have abandoned worldly attachments and focus solely on achieving spiritual enlightenment.
Sadhus lead simple and austere lives, often living in caves, forests or temples. He is initiated into spiritual practice by a guru who gives them a new name and a meditation mantra. Sadhus believe that by renouncing worldly pleasures and indulging in meditation and contemplation, they can achieve liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
Sadhus are often recognized by their distinctive appearance, which includes wearing orange robes and long hair and beards. They are highly respected in Indian society and are often sought after for their blessings and spiritual guidance.
However, it is important to remember that not all sadhus are the same and the sadhu community is very diverse in terms of beliefs, practices and lifestyles. See it in my portraits!
